Singular + Plural Nouns

单数名词和复数名词

A singular noun stands for one person or thing.

单数名词代表一个人或东西。

A plural noun stands for more than one person or thing.

复数名词代表一个以上的人或东西。

Plural nouns are formed in several ways:
复数名词由几种方式构成:


  • by adding "s" to the singular nouns
       e.g.    room ---> rooms
                 nurse ---> nurses            

  • by adding "es" to nouns ending in "s", "sh", "ch", "x" and "o"
       e.g.    watch   ---> watches
                 tomato ---> tomatoes


  • by changing "y" into "ies"
       e.g.    fly     ---> filies
                 lorry ---> lorries 
               
  • irregular forms
       e.g.    thief ---> thieves
                 knife ---> knives            
  • same singular and plural forms
      e.g.    foot     ---> feet
                mouse ---> mice                           
                                                     

  • same singular and plural forms
       e.g.    sheep ---> sheep
                 deer   ---> deer
